Trombone

Matthew Gee is a distinguished British trombonist celebrated for his versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral principal,
and teacher.
He serves as Principal Trombone with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aurora Orchestra, and is a member of the acclaimed brass septet Septura.
After studying music at King’s College London, the Royal College of Music, and further postgraduate studies in Bern, Gee began his professional career as section principal with orchestras such as the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and the Orchestra of Opera North before taking up his current principal positions.
A compelling solo artist, Gee has released multiple solo albums — many on the Naxos label — including imaginative programmes that explore classical song cycles and contemporary works composed specifically for him. He has premiered major trombone concertos, including the UK premiere of Kurt Schwertsik’s Trombone Concerto, and continues to inspire composers to expand the trombone repertoire.
Gee’s international performance career includes collaborations with top orchestras and ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
He has also recorded extensively for film and television,
contributing to scores for major productions.
Actively involved in the wider trombone community, Matthew Gee has given masterclasses and festival performances around the world, and supports the instrument’s development through leadership roles and educational outreach.
He is a Getzen artist, known for his rich, expressive tone and technical command across a wide range of repertoire.
Gee also shares his expertise as a faculty member of the Royal Academy of Music in London, mentoring the next generation of trombonists.
