The “Rebels” concert focuses on composers and performers who deliberately push against inherited models, reshaping sound, form, and instrumental roles. From Schnittke’s ironic dialogue with the past and Stravinsky’s sharply defined neo-classicism to Lutosławski’s concentrated miniatures and Ko’s uncompromising contemporary solo work, the program traces a lineage of musical dissent and reinvention. Paganini’s legendary Caprice is radically transformed for trumpet and tuba.
After the intermission, bassist-trombonist Dave Taylor steps forward with his own music before Beethoven’s expansive String Trio asserts the classical tradition at its most ambitious and forward-looking. The evening closes with Schnyder’s Trio Mondial, where trumpet, flugelhorn, and tuba collide in a high-energy synthesis of classical craft,
jazz language, and global rhythm.
