Mikhail “Misha” Tsiganov is a highly respected jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader known for his lyrical touch, deep harmonic sense, and inventive post‑bop style.

Critics and peers alike praise his ability to balance lyrical expressiveness with sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic invention—placing him among the leading voices in contemporary jazz piano.

Tsiganov began playing piano at age six in an artistic household—his father was a sculptor and his mother a music teacher—and went on to graduate from the prestigious Mussorgsky College of Music. In 1990 he won a prize at the All‑Russia Jazz Competition, and in 1991 vibraphonist Gary Burton invited him to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Shortly thereafter he moved to New York City, where he became woven into the vibrant jazz scene and built his reputation as a performer and collaborator.

Over decades in the U.S., Tsiganov has recorded and performed with many notable jazz figures, including Clark Terry, Michael and Randy Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Chambers, Hendrik Meurkens, Donny McCaslin, Seamus Blake, and Alex Sipiagin. He gained early wider visibility as the featured pianist on the Bill Cosby TV show Little Billfrom 1999 to 2002, and has played at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall, Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, and Iridium.

He has also worked with the conductors Iliahu Inbal, Andrei Boreiko, Raimond Leppard, George Hanson and Petr Altrichter. Besides his long collaboration with his father Lazar, Pavel Berman has been an active chamber musician with artists spanning from different generations, including Andras Schiff, Bruno Canino, Nabuko Imai, Aruel Nicolè, Gustav Rivenius, Alexander Kniazev, Daniel Muller-Schott.

As a leader, Tsiganov has released numerous albums—several on the respected Criss Cross Jazz label—including The Artistry of the Standard (2014), Spring Feelings (2016), Playing With the Wind (2018), and more recent projects like Misha’s Wishes (2022) and Painter of Dreams (2024).

His recordings showcase his bold reharmonizations, original compositions, and a blend of acoustic jazz with expanded sonic palettes.

Tsiganov’s piano style is celebrated for its combination of technical mastery, emotional depth, and rhythmic vitality.
